Accessing the Wendel collection of rock art photographs
• The Neanderthal Museum has kindly made available to the general public the superb collection of photographs from the Wendel Collection.
• This page will show you how to access the page and to download any files you wish to use.
• Feedback on improvements to the instructions gratefully received.
• The process of access is by no means intuitive, but after a while you will do it with ease.
Step 1:
Go to: https://archiv.neanderthal.de/data/
The website opens with this screen:
Click on the 'explore' link at the very top right of the screen, 'circled' in red in my image.
This screen appears.
Click on the 'DISAPALE' text and a drop down menu appears, as shown here. Choose Wendel Collection, as shown.
This screen appears.
Typing SW and the first two digits of the code for each photograph determine the site which will appear, when you put that code into the tab which says 'Photo ID or subject'.
So the four character code SW27 will bring up all the photos from Niaux on one page, SW20 will bring up all the photos from Grotte du Portel on one page, or SW16 will bring up all the photos from Laussel on one page.
Note that a complete list of all the codes is available further down this page.
Note also that if you keep this window open, you can continue to put in the four character codes for sites to download individual photographs from, which speeds the process up considerably.
I will put in the four character code SW01 which is the first page of the photographs from the Wendel Collection, of Bara-Bahau, as an example, by typing it and pressing 'enter'.
Note that a complete list of all the codes is available further down this page.
And all the photos from Bara-Bahau appear on the page, each identified by an eight character code as shown.
(click on this image to see the full size image)
Note also that if you keep this window open, you can continue to put in the eight character codes for the photos on the page, which speeds the process up considerably.
We are nearly there!
Choose a photo you would like to look at by clicking on it. I will choose a distinctive image, SW010103, third one in the list.
Click on the image as shown.
This small overlay screen pops up.
Click on the left hand link of 'show files' at the bottom of this pop-up, as shown in the image.
An even smaller overlay screen pops up.
Contrary to what the info seems to say, you cannot immediately view the file, it can only be downloaded and then opened by a graphics program.
Click on either download link, the file should save to your download file.
Open the file from your download folder with whatever graphics app you use, I mostly use photoshop because I have it, but any graphics app (and some but not all browsers) will load the .tif file at least.
Make any changes like cropping and enhancement you wish, and save.
PHEW !!!
Readers should be aware that although Wendel's original photographs were no doubt excellent, they were colour slides (the best medium for this task at the time) which have been through a scanning process, and often there are 'artefacts' in the form of dust and hairs and lines (scratches) which are better removed.
Note also that most of the images will be improved by using a graphics app that will allow you to enhance or change shadows and highlights, exposure, and colour balance.
Please let me know if these (hard won!) instructions are helpful, and how they could be improved. I dream of a one click solution...
All the codes are shown in the list below.
